Description:
VL Sääski planes were built during late 20\'s and early 30\'s. Main usage was training in Finnish air force.
This SÄ-117 is scratch build indoor scale model. It\'s done mainly from balsa. Due to low speed it requires calm weather or indoor hall. In those conditions it is pleasure to fly.
The project was expected to require reasonable much work thus it made sense to pay extra effort to select best available parts. Weight was very critical in achieving most realistic flight performance. I have used AXI 2204/54 in indoor aerobatic planes and the engine has proven to be extremely robust and reliable with good power to weight ratio. Thus this small AXI was quite natural choice for this project. To fit motor inside the dummy motor I was forced to make some tiny exersice with mounting and axle. This naturally with own risk.
Recommendation from Axi for trainers is 300g and the plane was expected to be ~350g. I was also little afraid whether this small AXI would have enough power for this size plane. Target was not aerobatic maneuvers but basic scale maneuvers. Made some early trials by loading the plane close to expected final weight ( video from a trial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFymNJ_ANdg ) and based on very good results from the trials decided to continue with the motor.
Now a few happy flights with the finalized plane behind and really happy with the engine.
