Description:
For years after seeing the fullsize version fly I have wanted to build this
model. I enlarged the 3 views and took measurements from the full size and
made the plans. I carved the masters from MDF, foam and fibreglass.
Everything was then gelcoated and molds were made. The wings are obechi over
foam with carbon spars. The initial power plant was going to be a 38 Zenoah.
Having spent nearly 4 years on the model the taxis tests where done and
found that the petrol motor lacked power and also added considerable weight.
AUW was 25 kg. I did aerotow it in this configuration and it flew well. I
then found out about AXIs fantastic range of large electric motors and
purchased AXI 5330/24. I pulled out all the petrol motor system and install
the AXI . It was a lot simpler, lighter and cleaner setup. Also after prop
experimenting I was able to 4 times the power. At the moment I can easily
get 6.5 kg thrust @51amps. With 8000mah Lipos I can get up to 9 min motor
run. With a motor run of 3 mins the model is up to a considerable height
with thermal flights lasting over 1 hour. Thanks to the AXI motor it is a
great model to fly with great authority! I am now building a new one to more
scale to enter it in scale aircraft competitions.
