Description:
Inspiration for the project was initiated by an article and German plans published in the 1916 Flight magazine. I did the design (scale 1:6.8)in Autocad, replicating the original structure as far as possible. Had the parts lazercut, cowl formed in \'Boeing\' thermoplastic and started the build. To keep the structure light I used balsa as thin as possible and reinforced it with thin carbon rods. Wheels were scratch built from balsa and the complete model covered in silver Solite. Water transfers were home made and the completed model finished with a matt clear spray. Ready to fly it weighed in at 493gms, giving a wing loading of 4.7oz/sq ft.
First and subsequent flights were an absolute joy. Slow flight, very responsive controls and with the efficient Axi 2208 and the 1320 battery, managed flight times in excess of 30 min.
An extremely satisfying project, complimented and made possible by AXI.
