Description:
Funtana SEE!
The Kit
The Funtana is a kit plane made by Exclusive Modellbau Harald Weiershäuser (Germany). Wing, Fuselage and Tail are made from balsa and ply wood. All the wooden parts are CNC cut. You can purchase the model as a kit, ARC or ARF.
Version SEE!
The current version of this very successful model is the Funtana Pro, however my electric model is based on the predecessor the standard Funtana. The extension “SEE!” stands for Special Edition Electric! my own creation.
The following items are unique for the SEE! Version: The position of the canopy is shifted forward by about 70mm by an enlargement of the fuselages back, a ventral fin is added on the bottom side of the engine cowling. Both measures are taken in order to improve the knife edge flying qualities. The canopy itself is made from carbon fibre for weight reduction, I used the original transparent plastic canopy as a mould. Finally the horizontal tail can be disassembled. Originally the tail should be glued into the fuselage. The loads of the tail are solely carried by the thin steel wires.
Propulsion
The model is powered by an AXI 5330/F3A managed by an 90 Amps Jeti Controller. The engine is kept in position by an additional former carrying a a ball bearing with is attaché dto the rotating end of the engine. This measure helps to reduce engine deformation in manoeuvres involving high gyro forces on the rotating propeller (i.e. “Blender”, “Power Roll”). The propeller is a APC 22x10, which was clipped to about 21 inches. I tried a wide palette of APC propellers, this one seems to be the best compromise for static thrust, top speed and power consumption. The accumulator is a Thunder Power ProLite 10S4P (5300mAh) as it is used for F3A. During a flight of about 13 minutes 4000 to 4300mAh are consumed. Compared to the Funtana I operated before with an OS 140 RX, with this electric set up static trust is massively improved, but top speed is a bit lower. A big advantage of the electric engine is the absence of vibrations and oil, which usually perish the model structure. A special advantage of the AXI outer runner is the absence of a gear, which further reduces the maintenance effort.
Equipment
The model is equipped with digital Hitec servos, a Futaba PCM receiver and a 750mAh, 5cell NiMh battery for the RC. This small battery is sufficient for two powerful flights. The original glass fiber landing gear is replaced by a very elegant carbon fibre gear from Wistmodel (model “Prestige”). The total model weight is 4.9 kg.
Flying the Funtana SEE!
This model is the perfect choice for your daily pattern and/or free style training. Transportation in a station wagon is no problem, model assembly takes only a few minutes. Due to the electric propulsion it can by flown in any noise sensitive area, you waste no time for fuelling, engine adjustment and cleaning.
Due to a very forward CG position, the model flies perfectly neutral even in windy conditions through all pattern manoeuvres. I would not hesitate to use my Funtana SEE! for an FAI F3A contest. However, the Funatana shows full 3D capabilities: Post stall flying qualities are excellent and smooth. It is well suited to learn classical 3D manoeuvres like Torque and Power Roll.
